Dive sites

The commercial and fishing ports of Palamós and Sant Antoni de Calonge pass before the boat as you dive at Roca Roja. Further south, you can see the most popular defence tower on the Costa Brava, the Torre Valentina, which used to be a lookout for pirates coming from the sea. On your way to Llosa Platja d'Aro, you pass the port of Playa De Aro. The topography of the Llosa de Palamós dive spot is one of the most varied, with canyons lining up to Posidonia meadows with schools of sars and sometimes dorados. The surroundings of the lighthouses of the region are ideal for some nice dives. At the La llosa lighthouse, there is a large sandy beach and then the promenade with small wooden bridges to Torre Valentina and Platja d'Aro. The lighthouse of Palamós, Llosa de Palamós, also known as the lighthouse of Punta del Molino, is located on a secluded plot of land once marked by a windmill. Facing the commercial port, it warns large ships of the risk of running aground.

As you head off to La Sardana, you can admire the two most beautiful beaches on the Costa Brava, Castell beach with its historical remains dating back to the 6th century BC and Fosca beach, with its fine golden sand and its immense length of 510 metres. The Roca del Món, a rocky shoal off the coast of Palamós, with a peak of 21 m and a drop-off of 42 m, is the ideal spot to follow the PADI Deep Diving speciality. On your way to explore the Gorgonias site, you can admire the sight of the fishermen's huts converted into charming houses in Cala Margarita. Nearby Calella and Llafranc, the Sant Sebastián lighthouse, with its 150 years of history, catches your eye as you make your way to the Furió Tamariu diving site. You will also see the 17 hectares of the Cap Roig gardens, dotted with artists' sculptures, home to almost 1,000 species of plants from all over the world. The dyke of the Port of Palamós is also a very interesting place to dive because of its rich biodiversity. The outer side of the dyke is accessible from the 40-metre long Morro del Vedell beach with some offshore islets, Esculls d'en Roca.

Take SSI courses or do your first dive in Cala Els Pots cove. Dive at El Tabal, near the cape of San Sebastián de la Guarda, where you will find the most important lighthouse in Catalonia, San Sebastián. Inaugurated in 1857, it stands 168 metres above the sea. Marvel at the Tamariu canyons, narrow canyons carved by the sea currents. Their walls are covered in yellow gorgonians and laced with coral-filled cracks with groupers, sea breams, lobsters, red mullets, moray eels and even barracudas. Cala Margarita, named after a small village attached to Palamós near the exit of the harbour, is also the perfect place to retreat when the weather is bad. On the 10-metre deep rocks, there are nudibranchs, scorpionfish and octopus. There are even rays buried in the sediment. The dive route at Aguja de Castell is shallow, parallel to the coast, with sandy bottoms, rocks and small pinnacles.

Others Activities

Every afternoon, watch the fish unloaded by the local fishermen being sold at the fish market (Llotjadel Peix). A visit to the Fishing Museum will also teach you about fishing techniques in the Mediterranean. Gourmets and cooking fans will enjoy the Espaidel Peix, where you can learn to identify fish and cook them! Try the local specialty, Palamos prawns.

On the cami de ronda, between La Fosca and Platja de Castell, walk along the sea to see the 12th-century Castle of Sant Esteve de Mar. The houses of the fishing village of Cala s'Alguer date from the 15th century. On the promontory of sa Cobertera, you will find archaeological remains from the 6th century BC. Visit the surrounding villages, such as Pals, Peratallada, Calella de Palafrugell.
