The Common moray eel is generally dark brown in color, sometimes shaded with purple, and marbled with white and yellow. The head is short, massive, with a rounded profile. The teeth are long and pointed.
It can measure up to 1.50m.
The Mediterranean moray lives on overhangs, in crevices, on wrecks, and is found from the surface to a depth of 100 m. It is very territorial, hunts at night and remains hidden during the day.
Its skin is covered with mucus and deprived of scale which makes it slippery and enables it to snake among rocks. It opens and closes its mouth to breathe.

Food
Common moray eel is an ambush hunter, which means it remains in its burrow with its head at ground level waiting for prey to come near it. It feeds on octopus, squid, cuttlefish, fish, crustaceans and sometimes carrion. It has an acute sense of smell but is almost completely blind. It catches prey using its teeth.
Breeding
Mating takes place from July to September. Common moray eel is oviparous and lays eggs of 5 mm in diameter. The larvae drift with the current for a year. They then fall to the seabed where adult life begins.
