The Common porpoise are found along coasts, in estuaries, rivers and around harbours, in waters with temperatures below 15°C. They can be found at depths of up to 200 metres. It can be seen either alone, in pairs between mother and juvenile, or in small groups of up to ten individuals. It can live up to fifteen years. Its predators are the white shark and killer whales.

Food

The common porpoise is a toothed cetacean. It feeds on fish such as herring, mackerel, sardines, cephalopods, and small crustaceans.

Breeding

It reaches sexual maturity around the age of 5 depending on the geographical area. The gestation period lasts 10 months. The female gives birth every year or every two years. The calf measures 75 cm and weighs 5kg. It has to breathe at the surface at birth. It feeds its mother's rich-protein milk and is weaned 6 months after birth. It grows fast and gets its first teeth when its diet changes. It is independent at the age of 1.
