Hammerhead shark

Swim, Snorkel, Dive, See, Meet, Watch the Hammerhead shark

The Hammerhead Shark can be distinguished from other species by the short width of its rather curved head. At 5 meters long, it lives in temperate waters, along the coast up to 30 meters deep. It lives until the age of twenty. It is fished for its fins which are sold on Asian markets, for its liver oil used as a vitamin product or to be transformed into flour for aquaculture. There are nine species of hammerhead sharks.

The Hammerhead Shark is viviparous. During the breeding season, the male bites the female to mate. The female retains the male's semen for several months to fertilize herself later. Gestation lasts ten months. The female gives birth to fifteen to forty-five juveniles. Newborns are about 60 cm long. They stay in shallow, sheltered water to avoid predators. They reach sexual maturity at the size of two to three meters long depending on whether they are male or female.
