It moves in the open sea and hunts at night in the cold waters of the northern and southern hemispheres. It is not usually found in tropical areas. It sometimes goes up to shallower depths to hunt, off the Azores islands and Corsica. It probes between 100 and 200 meters deep to follow krill banks. It opens a gaping mouth to swallow large volumes of water which it filters through its baleen plates.
It eats krill, sardines and herring. He needs two tons of food per day for his daily ration. Its predators are killer whales and humans with their pollution and drift nets.

Gestation is about eleven months. The newborn is 6.5 meters long and weighs 4 tons. The female nurses for seven months at a rate of 70 liters of milk per day. She gives birth every three years. The juveniles stay in rather warm water to begin their existence. Migration begins when the juvenile reaches twelve meters long.
