Food
The green turtle is pelagic until the size of its carapace reaches 20 cm in diameter. Then, it evolves at the bottom of the water, close to the shore, in the mangroves and the herbariums as in the coral reefs, the estuaries or the lagoons. Depending on its age, it changes its diet. The juvenile turtle is carnivorous and eats small invertebrates, fish eggs, and fry, jellyfish and zooplankton. As they get older, they become herbivorous and ingest grass in the seagrass meadows with a menu of crustaceans, mollusks, jellyfish, and sponges.
Breeding
The green turtle reaches its sexual maturity around the age of twenty years according to its zone of origin. The female must be determined to be caught by the male, otherwise, she refuses the mating by biting him, standing upright in the water. The male uses his claws to cling to the ends of the carapace. He deposits his semen in the female's belly. Mating lasts a long time, on the surface or in deep water. Sometimes the female drowns, dragged along by the males around her. The female stores the male's sperm and later uses it to fertilize the eggs for an entire season. The eggs grow in compartmentalized places inside her body. This explains the staggering spawning every two weeks. She returns to the geographical area of her birth to lay eggs. She digs the sand to make a hole 60 cm deep where she lays about 100 round eggs 40 mm in diameter. She then fills the hole with her hind limbs and sweeps the area with her front limbs to hide the traces of nesting. It then returns to the water. She can lay eggs for 20 years, always in the same way. The embryos are born male or female depending on the temperature and humidity of the soil where incubation takes place.
