Sperm whale

Swimming, Snorkeling and Diving to See and Watch the Sperm whale

The Sperm whale head is very characteristic of an almost square melon. It has a very dark grey back with bluish reflections. The male can reach 20 meters and the female 15. Females live in groups with juveniles in warm waters. Males are solitary and migrate to the food-rich polar waters. They often live in the open sea. The large sperm whale does not have a natural predator strong enough to confront an adult, only killer whales immersing themselves in the mass can attack juveniles. The sperm whale's enemies are internal parasites in the ear canal. These parasites affect the sonar and disturb the sperm whale to the point where it cannot feed or orient itself.

Food

The sperm whale feeds on cephalopods, octopus, and squid. It hunts during the day, undertaking long dives (around 35 or 45 minutes) to depths of 1000m. It comes up to breathe for ten minutes before diving again. It also feeds on big fish, sharks and seals. The female ingests 500kg per day, and the male needs 1.5 tons of fish and cephalopods per day. The sperm whale is an ambush hunter, lying in wait for a prey to come near it.

Breeding

Male sperm whales engage in violent conflict in order to mate with several females. Reproduction is viviparous, with the gestation lasts 15 months. Every four years, the female gives birth to a newborn that measures 4m and weighs one tonne. Nursing lasts for three years.
