Blue dragon

Swim, Snorkel, Dive, See, Meet, Watch the Blue dragon

The blue dragon can be recognized by its very elongated body that can reach 15 cm. It can be white, blue, orange, yellow and brown. It has 3 purple stripes on these buccal tentacles. It lives in reef corals from a few meters below the surface to a depth of 30 m. It lives near the surface and contorts itself so as to gain more sunlight. This fan-shaped posture allows for better exposure to light and increases the effects of photosynthesis. The name 'solar sea slug' is therefore very appropriate. The blue dragon can secrete an itching venom.

Food

The Blue Dragon feeds on hydrozoans. It collects small algae contained in the hydrozoans to regenerate its own tissue. In the presence of light, these algae produce sugar which it needs to live, but it is not enough. It must complete its diet with other nutrients. Micro-algae accumulate in its body until the adults become brown, whereas the juveniles are blue.

Breeding

The Blue dragon is hermaphrodite, which means they are at the same time male and female. They have a genital orifice and a penis. However, mating necessitates two partners. They adopt a top-to-tail position to fertilize the 5000 white eggs released under the form of a transparent cord that spirals along the substratum. The adults remain several days around the place where the eggs are laid. The larvae hatch and become planktonic.
