Information

A diving holiday in Malta allows you to explore the wreck of the Um El Faroud, a Libyan oil tanker 110 m long and 16 m wide. This ship was built in Middlesborough, England, and launched on May 31, 1969. When used in Norway, this steel tanker was called the MV Seafalcon. In 1973, in Libya, she was renamed MV Um El Faroud. Until 1995, it carried refined fuel on the route between Italy and Libya.

On 3 February 1995, while Um El Faroud was at the dry dock in Grand Harbour, an explosion took place during the night, killing 9 people. The oil tanker was seriously damaged and, considered irreparable, it remained at berth in Valletta for three years. It was then decided to convert it to serve as an artificial reef on a diving site. On 2 September 1998, the oil tanker Um El Faroud sank parallel to the reef, 50 m south-west of the Wied Iz-Zurrieq crossing point.

A commemorative copper plaque bearing the names of those who were killed in the explosion was fixed to the wreck. The wreck lies on a sandy bottom at a depth of 36 m and its superstructures are 16 m high. During the winter of 2005 to 2006, the wreck broke into two parts during a storm and became accessible from the shore. It is one of the most popular dives in Malta. The scrap merchants removed all doors and windows and cut out the entrance and exit holes in the hull with many penetration possibilities for experienced and certified divers.
