Mine laying submarine (1931)
Information
From Ramatuelle, Saint-Tropez, and Cavalaire, in the south of France, you have the opportunity to visit the wreck of the Rubis, one of the few sunken submarines on which you can dive.Built and launched on 30 September 1931 by the Toulon shipyards, she is part of a fleet of 6 submarines designed to lay mines without surfacing. Measuring 66 m long, 7 m wide, and 8 m high, she is equipped with a 3900 HP Vickers-Armstrong engine, allowing her to reach a speed of 8 knots underwater - knowing that she can probe to a depth of 50 m - and 12 knots on the surface. Armed with guns, machine guns, mines, and torpedoes, the maneuvers are carried out by its crew of 45 men.
In 1936, the Rubis was in Cherbourg. In 1939, the submarine sails in the Mediterranean around Tunisia and then leaves to base in Dundee, Scotland. It carries out missions in Norwegian waters while the men of the Reich invade this country in 1940. After the Armistice of 22 June 1940, the British requisitioned French ships, including Le Rubis, which now sails under the English flag. Most of the crew joined the Free French Forces. The Rubis, until 1945, carried out a series of missions, enabling ships to be sunk by dropping mines. On 8 June 1945, she returned to Oran where she was disarmed to serve as a training ship and then as a submarine base. In 1957, the general staff decided to sink it. On 31 January 1958, two boats towed the Rubis to 2600 meters from Cap Camarat. The Commander placed a 9 kg explosive charge at the stern of the submarine which sank on a 40 m bottom.
It is one of the most beautiful dives you can make because it has remained in perfect condition and its history is interesting. Expect a dive at a depth of 40 m in a sometimes very strong current. Only one dive will be necessary to go around the Ruby with its damaged stern. On your way to the bow, position yourself towards the kiosk to get a nice overview of the submarine. Numerous gaping hatches open in the hull, inhabited by conger eels and moray eels of good size. The two propellers have disappeared. A chain cutter is at the bow, surrounded by anthias and wrasses.
