Coal ship (1920)

Information

A diving trip to Banyuls-Sur-Mer and Cerbère on the Mediterranean coast of France allows you to dive the wreck of a coal freighter, the Saumur, built-in 1920 in Scotland. Flying the French flag, this ship was requisitioned by the Germans, then armed by the Italians, and took the name of Valentino. On 21 May 1944, the British submarine HMS Upstart sank her off Port-Vendres.
The wreck of the Saumur lies on its keel, straight on the bottom, at a depth of 45 m. The sloping stern on the side is separated from the main part. To be seen: the emergency propeller, the aft cargo mast, the bathroom, the galley; at the front of the ship, the cannon which still rotates on its axis; the stern with the anchor chain shafts. Congress has taken over the premises. Count two dives minimum to explore the Saumur.
