Saint Lucien

Characteristics of the wreck

41 m

Languedoc Roussillon
Mediterranean Sea
Cargo (1920)

A diving trip to Banyuls-Sur-Mer and Cerbère on the Mediterranean coast of France allows you to dive the wreck of the cargo ship Saint Lucien. 80 meters long and 11 meters wide, the boat was built in 1920 in Denmark, in Aalborg, the city whose name it bears. In 1940, the ship was requisitioned in Leith, Scotland, where it was transformed into a mineral cargo ship to transport coal between France and North Africa.
In 1941 she changed her name to Saint Lucien. In 1943, the ship was again requisitioned by the Germans. The Royal Navy submarine HMS Unruly sank her at the tip of Cape Béar, 10 minutes sailing time from Banyuls. The wreck now lies 41 meters on the bottom, at the location of the navigation channel with a large amount of boat traffic on the surface. Saint Lucien is less well preserved than the Bananier, Le Saumur, and l'Astrée.
