Information
A diving holiday in Carry-le-Rouet, Marseille or in Les Goudes, on the Mediterranean coast of France, allows you to dive the wreck of the cod cargo ship, the Miquelon. 49 metres long and 7.5 metres wide, this boat was originally called the Michel-Marcel and was built in 1911 by the Bertin de Bezons shipyards. It changed its name to become the Miquelon in 1913 when it was bought by the Compagnie La Morue Française et Sécherie de Fécamp. This ship was then intended to transport... cod between Newfoundland and France. On October 5, 1917, the ship left Marseille with so-called cast iron on board. The signalling, on its mast, no longer works. While it suddenly performs a manoeuvre to starboard, the steamer Balkan belonging to the Compagnie Fraissinet, spurs it on.
The Miquelon immediately sank without any casualties and lay upright on a 52-metre bottom in the safety channel of the port of Marseille. The wreck emerges from the bottom to a height of 6 m and the deck rises to a depth of 45 metres. To be seen: the bow on the port side with a lost fishing net, the cannon and a winch, the foremast, the hold with the spare propeller, in the middle of the superstructure, the chimney and the engine room with pressure gauges still visible. The aft hold contains a cargo of shells, grenades and ammunition, covered with crusting sponges. Bars are running around the wreck in all directions. At the stern, you can see the gun and propeller. Anthias, Apogon and
Damselfish are flying everywhere. Sometimes, you can observe the presence of here.
