Information
A diving trip from Cape Town or Simmon's Town, South Africa, allows you to dive the wreck of the steamer, the Maori. Built in the 1880's, this 175 m long ship travels between London and New Zealand carrying a cargo of railway lines, explosives, pipes and crockery. On August 5, 1909, while arriving in Cape Town, the ship encountered thick fog and even drizzle. The ship struck a reef and sank near Sandy Bay. During the shipwreck, 32 of the 53 crew members of the original 53 died or disappeared.
The vessel now lies between 13 and 21m on a 122m long rocky reef in a sheltered bay off the coast of Karbonkelberg, about 7.5 km from the port of Hout Bay. From the deck of the dive boat, you can see the reef by transparency when the water is clear. To see: steam locomotives, freight railway lines. The porcelain and the ship's bell found on board are on display at the Hout Bay Museum in Cape Town. The wreck was explored by Jacques Cousteau aboard the Calypso. The best time to explore it is in October.
