Information
The HMS Proselyte is a former Dutch 36-gun Jason frigate, built in 1770 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Its crew mutinied and handed it over to the British in 1796. It then served in the Royal Navy until it sank in 1801.
The Proselyte sank on September 4, 1801. It was en route from Saint-Kitts to the port of St. Martin. It hit the Man of War Shoal, a reef near Philipsburg.
The whole crew was saved. The court-martial found the captain and his lieutenant guilty of negligence. They were demoted and dismissed.
The wreck is lying on its starboard side in 15 m of water, not far from Great Bay to Philipsburg. Many guns, ballast bars, and coral inlaid anchors are scattered around the wreck on the bottom. Shipwreck objects are on display at the Saint Maarten Museum.
