Information
A diving holiday in Caen and Ouistreham, France, allows you to dive into the wreck of the HMS Lawford. In 1944, the United States built this escort destroyer in Boston, then ceded it to Great Britain under the name of USS Lawford, which became HMS Lawford, and was responsible for protecting Anglo-American convoys during large-scale military operations. This ship thus took part in Operation Overlord off the coast of Normandy and even became the command post where high-ranking officers coordinated the landing actions on Juno Beach.
During the night of 5-6 June 1944, HMS Lawford sailed as part of the Task Force. On 8 June, the air attack led by the Germans was aimed at destroying the coalition military ships in the Baie de Seine. Their missiles hit HMS Lawford and cut her in two. It is said that the two parts of the ship floated for a while before sinking to a depth of 21 meters, taking 37 crew members with them. While diving you go around the wreck colonized with lobsters, conger eels, and ... scallops!
