Characteristics of the wreck
Sharm El Sheik
A diving trip from Sharm el-sheik, Egypt, remains the perfect opportunity to dive the wreck of a Cypriot cargo ship, the Yolanda, built-in 1964. In 1980, the ship sailed to Aqaba with a cargo consisting of containers filled with sanitary facilities, bathtubs, pipes, WCs, cases of whisky and wallpaper. The BMW 320 type car belonging to the captain commanding the ship is even on board! On the night of 1 April 1980, the Yolanda hit a reef in Ras Mohamed.
During the first 5 years after the shipwreck, many divers visited this site. In 1985, a very big sea blow disembedded the wreck embedded in the reef and it fell into oblivion for 20 years. In 2005, two divers found it lying at a depth of 145 meters. Now you are zigzagging between the toilets, pipes and unrecognizable rubble of Yolanda Wreck located on a shallow sandy area, among scorpion fish, napoleons, blue-spotted stingrays and crocodile fish.
Other points of interest such as Anemone city and Shark Reef are scattered over this vast area that you explore in a single drift dive. Anemone city is located between 12 and 20 meters deep and then you arrive at Shark Reef, a vertical wall covered with gorgonians, dropping down to more than 700 meters.
