Caribbean reef shark
Swim, Snorkel, Dive, See, Meet, Watch the Caribbean reef shark
The Caribbean shark lives on the flats of coral reefs. It swims close to drop-offs to depths of thirty meters. It is also found in the mouths of Brazilian rivers. It remains motionless, resting on the bottom of a cave to maintain a current of water through its gill slits.
It is able to position its stomach upside down to rid its mucous membrane of non-digestible particles such as parasites and mucus. This is its way of cleaning itself. Caribbean sharks are accompanied by schools of jacks and remoras.
It deters them by swimming quickly and jerky, changing direction frequently and tilting its pectoral fins. Its main predators are tiger sharks and bulldogs.

Food
The Caribbean Reef Shark hunts at night and eats rays, fish, cephalopods, shrimp, and crabs.
It picks up low-frequency signals indicating the presence of an injured fish. It circles its prey slowly. Then it tightens the diameter of its circles. At a short distance from its prey, it seems interested in an approach and then seems to give up at the last moment. Then, in a split second, he spins and runs at it, grabs it and runs away like a thief with the prey in his mouth.
Breeding
The Caribbean shark is placental viviparous, reaching sexual maturity when it measures between 1.52 m to 1.68 m for a male and between 2 m to 2.5 m for a female.
The female gives birth every 2 years to between 3 and 6 pups measuring around 70 cm. Gestation lasts about 1 year.
The calving period is not the same in both hemispheres. It takes place between February and April in the northern hemisphere and between November and December in the south.
