Striped red mullet

Swim, Snorkel, Dive, See, Meet, Watch the Striped red mullet

The Striped red mullet grows on sand and gravel bottoms as well as in Posidonia meadows, searching the substratum with its barbels. Its predators are monkfish, conger eels, sea bass and of course sharks and also a man. A red mullet could live for about ten years, but the species is fished a lot. It is estimated that it is fished at about 800 tonnes a year, using trawls and nets.

Food

The Striped red mullet dwells on sandy and gravel seabeds as well as on Posidonia fields. It searches the sand with its barbels which lift up clouds of sediments. It feeds on sea worms, crustaceans, and mollusks, whereas the juvenile eats plankton.

Breeding

The Striped red mullet reaches sexual maturity around the age of 3. The eggs are pelagic and drift with the current. They hatch a week later depending on water temperature. The juveniles drift for five more months and take on a pink coloring when they fall to the seabed. The striped red mullet is thought to live for ten years.
