Food
The Mimic Octopus hunts by sliding across the sand and looking for prey such as fish, crabs and sea worms. To propel itself, it emits a jet of water from its siphon.
Its defense mechanism consists in imitating different toxic animal species. Its remarkable capacity to imitate allows it to approach prey that would normally flee from it. When it bites its prey, it emits salivary toxins that paralyze it. It looks for tunnels and burrows to feed or to hide from predators. When it does this, one sees only its eyes and head sticking out from the hole. It is itself hunted by barracudas and sharks.
Breeding
The male places semen inside the female's coat. The male dies a few months after this process. The female carries this bag of sperm for several months until her eggs are laid she uses the sperm to fertilize them. Then she keeps the ribbons of eggs under one of her arms. She then moves with her suction cups under her tentacles. When the eggs are ready to hatch, she dies. The juveniles are on their own as soon as they hatch and stay in shallow water to find enough food to escape from predators...
