Short-snouted seahorse

Swim, Snorkel, Dive, See, Meet, Watch the Short-snouted seahorse

The Shortnose Seahorse is about 10 cm long. It evolves on sand and mud bottoms, in ponds, lagoons, and environments protected from the current, up to about 30 meters of water. It adapts to changes in salinity up to a certain percentage above which it dies. It's tail hugs algae to securely anchor itself to the bottom and allow it to hunt on the look-out.

Food

The Short-snouted seahorse has a very small mouth. It feeds on zooplankton, small crustaceans, larvae, and fish eggs. It lays on the ground and sucks up its prey from the sand with its movable jaw. It regurgitates the inedible parts by its gills.

Breeding

The Shortnose Seahorse spawns from May to July. It reaches sexual maturity at the age of one year. The male makes a courtship ritual with the female, which marks the beginning of the breeding season. The male then empties his incubation pouch of the water it contains. The female passes on eggs to him, which are fertilized as they pass through. The male incubates the eggs for about a month. His ventral pouch has an inner wall covered with highly vascularized villi. These will integrate the eggs by playing the role of a placenta that feeds a fetus. When the juveniles reach a certain size, they are expelled thanks to the contractions of the pouch. They are then left to their own devices in the water.
