Information

A diving holiday in Malta allows you to discover the wreck of the MV Karwela, an old passenger ferry, 58m long. This boat was sunk in August 2006 together with the MV Cominoland to become an artificial reef along the south-east coast of Gozo, off the Xatt l-Ahmar. A third wreck, the MV Xlendi, had already been scuttled in 1999.

The Cominoland lies 60 m east and the Xlendi lies 60 m west of the MV Karwela. The wreck lies upright at a depth of 40 m, 80 m from the shore. MV Karwela is the deepest wreck around Gozo as it is the most interesting and closest to the coast. The Xlendi is positioned upside down on the bottom. MV Karwela is larger than MV Cominoland.

To see: the three decks, the captain's cabin on the upper deck, 30 m deep, the old decorated Volkswagen Beetle, the interior of the ferry with the staircase lit by portholes. Beware the sediments remain suspended inside when the fins are accidentally struck. This wreck is accessible from the shore or by boat. Then, after the exploration, go back up on the nearby reef to 5m depth.
