Information

A diving holiday in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Cerbère or Argelès-sur-mer, on the Atlantic coast of France, allows you to explore the wreck L'Astrée.This 87-meter long and 13-meter wide coal ship was built in England in 1921 under the name Bellbro. In 1939, this ship was under the control of the National Shipping Company and was then assigned to transport goods such as mineral coal, phosphates, and steel to North African ports.

Its crew consisted of 26 men. The ship had few weapons on board to ensure its safety against enemy aircraft. In December 1942, the ship was requisitioned by the Germans.Renamed Elena, the ship sails then under the Italian flag to Tunisia. Then renamed L'Astrée, the ship returned from Egypt on 1 May 1944 when she was torpedoed near Port-Vendres by the submarine HMS Untiring.

The wreck lies in two parts, between 40 and 46 m, north of Cape Béar. To see: the castle with the starboard gangway, the kitchen with the stove, the toilet on the port side, the dining room with table remains, the bathroom with bathtub and washbasin of the captain. At the stern, the deck is cluttered with cables. Conger eels, lobsters, and crayfish are hidden in every nook and cranny. Wolves, sea breams, and sars roam tirelessly through the wreck. Schools of sardines and anchovies roar in every corner. Sometimes you see a sunfish in the corner.
