Information
A diving trip from Cape Town, South Africa, allows you to dive on the wreck of the boat RMS Athens. Built-in 1856 by the Denny of Dumbarton shipyard, the Royal Mail Ship Athens is equipped by the Union shipping company. The ship is about to weigh anchor to go to Mauritius when a fire breaks out in the boilers. On May 17, 1865, the ship sank between Mouille Point and Green Point, along the Cape Peninsula, on the Atlantic slope. The wreck is now 1 km from the Oceana Power Boat Club slipway in Granger Bay.
The remains of the engine block are visible on the surface and mark the dive site. The wreck is at an average depth of 5 m, or even 7 m depending on the tide, with part of the remains protruding into the surf zone, stirred up by the waves. You will discover a microcosm of crustaceans, abalones, starfish, sea urchins, and small sponges. Visibility is average, with a luminosity due to the shallowness of the water, but which is reduced when there is a swell because it puts the shell sand in suspension. This site is accessible from the shore or from a boat.
