Information
A diving trip to El Gouna and Hurghada, Egypt allows you to dive the wreck of the cargo ship Le Carina, built in the 1890s.In 1926, the ship left Europe and transited the Gulf of Suez to Calcutta in India. It carried in its holds a cargo of perishable goods as well as numerous gold and glass objects from Belgium. As the reef of Sha'ab Ali approached, a fire broke out onboard the Carina, which was quickly activated by the burning glass in the holds. The fire grew larger due to a cargo of cotton or wood. The captain was gripped by the fire that swept through his ship and could not see a fringing reef between Sha'ab Nab and Sha'ab Ali. The boat's hull hit the reef, the wood was torn off with an appalling noise, and water came into the holds. The fire is partially extinguished for a short period but the wind force increases and stirs up the embers.
The fire then resumes even more violently. The ship takes advantage of this to stop the south of the reef. Its crew bravely fights against the flames to save its boat, but it capsizes at the northern end of Shag Rock, in the extension of Sha'ab Ali.There is no longer any hope of saving the ship and the crew abandons it. Some sailors, injured and burned, are picked up on a ferry bound for the city of Suez. The fairly dilapidated wreck, resting on its starboard side, is between 5 and 15 meters deep. To be seen: the iron hull, the boilers, and the propeller. The must here is to make a night dive. The wreck has become a real artificial reef, covered with corals and colonized by nudibranchs.
