17 km long
and 9 km wide, Santa Maria Island is 80 km from São Miguel Island. A
destination much appreciated by tourists because of its warmer and drier
climate than the other islands, with less rainfall, it is nicknamed "Sun
Island". The landscapes are varied, between the plain, red desert, and lush
vegetation.
A dive trip to Santa Maria Island allows you to discover an underwater topography full of
volumes, with caves, volcanic tuffs, and large reefs. In summer, you may have
the chance to observe whale sharks or Mobula rays, which are very numerous in
Baixa Do Ambrosio, one of the best dive sites in the Azores.
Santa Maria
is full of marine species: nudibranchs, stingrays, groupers, barracudas, and hammerhead sharks. There are
many dive sites for both beginners and confirmed divers, as well as for snorkelers. Like the
other Azores islands, the best period is from June to September.

Located
32km from the northwest tip of Santa Maria, two sites are located in a natural
reserve that is prohibited from fishing: Ilhéus das Formigas and Dollabarat.
Due to the powerful currents, this dive site is renowned for its abundant fauna: hammerhead sharks, Galapagos sharks, bonitoes with striped backs, but also Thazards, Mediterranean barracudas, jacks, groupers, and giant manta rays.
Scuba diving in Santa Maria, allow to discover Baixa do Ambrósi, a very famous and
popular dive in the marine reserve because there is a lot of life between 5 and
15 meters deep. Schools of dozens of Mobula rays, amberjacks, and bluefish. For
experienced divers, continue towards a plateau about fifty meters long and 46
meters deep. You will observe stingrays with sometimes mola-mola, also called the "Ocean sunfish".
On the north coast of Santa Maria is the Banco João Lopes site. It is a shoal starting
at 14 meters and falling to 40 meters. To see: large groupers and Mobula rays. Gruta dos
Enchareús is located in the west of the island and starts at a depth of 15
meters. Discovery of a long gallery with two entrances, then an exploration of a cave at 32 meters with benches of jacks and amberjacks. Less than 2
km from the coast, opposite Praia Formosa, is Pedrinha Shoal. The strong
currents attract abundant underwater fauna. There are large schools of
groupers, barracudas and bass fish. Located 50
meters from the coast, the Baixa da Penedia shoal falls from 3 meters to 32
meters. This site is a rocky bottom covered with barnacles and a 15-meter deep
cave whose walls are covered with sponges. You will find black coral, a gem of
the abyss, peacock wrasse, octopus, moray eels, and blennies.
Baixa dos Badejos is located 2 km from the coast, opposite Maia, on the east coast. A long plateau at a depth of 16 meters, falling to a vertical wall to 35 meters.
Between large boulders and small sandy beaches, it is possible to observe two
types of groupers, the Mycteroperca fusca, and the Epinephelus marginatus.
Moderate to strong currents make this area suitable for experienced divers.
Located
16km from the Vila do Porto marina, Gruta Funda has a large cave between 30 and
40 meters long with a tunnel at a depth of 15 meters. Inside, large stingrays
immobile on the sand and narwhal shrimps.
On the northern slope of Santa Maria, exploration of numerous rocky slopes from 22
meters below the surface, around Lhéu das Lagoínhas. To see: peacock wrasse,
moray eels and triggerfish. Deeper, school of Mobula ray.

Beautiful walks in the Barreiro da Faneca, the red desert at the time of the superb sunrises and sunsets.Take a look at Ribeira do Maloás for the lava flows that, throughout the eruptions, have given rise to beautiful geological architecture, the "Giant's Causeway".
Make a small detour to the beautiful bays of Cré, Raposo, and Tagarete with calm and crystalline waters, or the natural pools in Maia and Anjos. Stroll in the bay of São Lourenço, with the islet of Romeiro. Beautiful view from Espigão on the vineyard squares, white houses on the waterfront, agricultural land.

The Haliotis diving center is located in the Colombo Hotel, on Santa Maria Island, Azores. The infrastructure can accommodate 60 people, with changing rooms, hot water showers with towels, two classrooms for courses from beginner to advanced level, a technical room with 50 pieces of equipment at the disposal of customers, a store selling branded equipment. There is even a place for divers to relax before and after their dives, to chat and have a drink.
The Haliotis diving school offers PADI training courses from the Bubblemaker for children to the Discover Scuba Diver course. And of course, Haliotis Santa Maria also prepares you for many PADI specialties including the AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty Course.
